With 'nothing', Elmer continues his sonic exploration, experimentation with songwriting style and structure, while retaining his unique yet familiar lo-fi genre-bending sound. Written and recorded amidst several sudden, drastic changes and events, including a move to a new state, health issues and hospitalizations, heartbreak, he now heads down a different path in life, much like he did in making the music on this album. Within the twelve tracks, Elmer tackles and expresses difficult but relatable emotions, as topics covered include mental illness, addiction and recovery, guilt, and lost love. Some songs take another approach, telling stories full of color that paints cryptic pictures with words.
